What is Crimson Wave?

Crimson Wave is a novel method of keeping track of your menstrual health and integrating that information seamlessly into your daily life. By tracking your basal body temperature, Crimson Wave gives you a live and predicted view of your period on an app that displays your progression through the three phases of your menstrual cycle as a color gradient. Through our tangible user interface, we hope to reduce stigma around menstruation and help users become more informed about their bodies.

We asked ourselves...

Is there a better, more convenient way to get an accurate picture of menstruation?

The Science

Crimson Wave was designed to recognize that every menstrual cycle is unique. To that end, we base our product on research about the relationship between menstruation and Basal Body Temperature (BBT). Over the course of the three menstrual stages, a person’s body temperature at complete rest—their BBT—will vary. By aggregating your data, we create a personalized product.

The Interface

Unlike other BBT thermometers, Crimson Wave’s biometric wearable and app take the work out of tracking your distinctive temperature. As you sleep, the wearable will record your BBT through its integrated temperature sensor. In the morning, the mirror will shine a certain color to let you know if you are ovulating, on your period, or somewhere in between.

The People

Periods should not cause anxiety or worry for anyone. Because of the accuracy with which BBT indicates menstruation, we believe that Crimson Wave is especially helpful for those who want to learn more about their bodies or whose cycles are unpredictable. Take out the stress from your period by letting Crimson Wave automatically measure your cycle for you.

Our Story

About

Crimson Wave began in a small Wellesley College computer science class. From the very beginning, we sat down and had a conversation about the kinds of engineers we wanted to be. We decided to be socially conscious innovators who reflect our intersectional feminism in our work; Crimson Wave stems from a desire to optimize and destigmatize menstrual health through human-computer interaction.

Since that first discussion, we have been invited to present at both the Association of Computing Machinery's (ACM's) 2018 Tangible Embedded and Embodied Interactions (TEI) Conference and Special Interest Group on Computer–Human Interaction's (SIGCHI's) Design for Sexual Wellbeing at the 2018 CHI Conference. In the future, we hope to perfect our product and put it out in the market for you! We also hope to use our wearable and mirror to create a necessary space for awareness around diverse menstrual experiences.
